BLACK VELVET
A 43′ Cutter for wood construction
Brewer / Wallstrom Design #63
BLACK VELVET was designed to provide a fast and weatherly cruiser along modern lines. With her long waterline, good stability and ample sail area she has proven to be an excellent performer in all weathers. Her .56 prismatic coefficient is ideal for high speeds in a good breeze and, along with this, she has a fine angle of entrance and a heavily developed bustle to reduce separation and resistance.
Construction is of strip planked mahogany 1.25 inch on bulkhead framing with a laminated keel and Vectra covered.
Decks and trunk are of marine plywood. This is a strong yet simple method of building and offers low maintenance along with durability.
Auxiliary power diesel 59 hp, with 90 gal. fuel capacity.
The arrangement provides good accommodations for up to 8 persons in 3 separate cabins, with generous stowage space throughout as is essential for cruising comfort. Two large toilet rooms and a spacious, workable galley are fitted as well as a large midship cockpit. The layout has proven to be perfect for extended voyages, or even for full time living aboard.
Her characteristics are as follows: LOA: 43’2″, LWL: 35’4″, Beam: 12’9″, Draft: 6’4″, Displacement: 24,800 lbs., Ballast: 10,100 lbs. lead, Sail Area: 895 sq. ft. This gave her a moderate Displacement/Length ratio of 251, Ballast/Displacement ratio of 40.7%, and a good Sail area/Displacement ratio of 16.8, all of which contributes to good performance in a cruising yacht.
